HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Health information technology allows comprehensive management of medical information and its secure exchange between health care consumers and providers. A health information technology professional is someone who is qualified to support the implementation and support of electronic health records, and the comprehensive management of health information across computerized systems between consumers, providers, government and quality entities, and insurers. Health information technology is, in general, increasingly viewed as the most promising tool for improving the overall quality, safety and efficiency of the health delivery system. Health information technicians are employed in managerial or technical capacities in the health information departments of hospitals, health clinics, long term care facilities, and other health care facilities. Opportunities are available in quality assurance programs, hospital associations, industries, governmental agencies, health information systems, insurance companies, financial

auditing firms, and consulting.
