NURSING

Nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. Nurses are hands-on health professionals who work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, home health care services, nursing care facilities, schools, and the military. They collaborate with all members of a health care team to provide the care needed by each patient. The field has a wide range of career opportunities, ranging from entry-level practitioner to doctoral-level researcher. Nurses also serve as advocates for patients, families and communities. They develop and manage nursing care plans, instruct patients and their families in proper care and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health. Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow due to the increased emphasis on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions, and the demand for health care services from a population that lives longer, more active lives.
