REMADE Institute: Workforce Profile

ObservedREMADEThemes All FocusAreas ENGINEERS

At the engineering level there was a clear observed theme in the data among the engineer groupings across all five nodes for an advertised prevalence of third-party and industry certifications heavily weighted to process improvement, quality assurance and project management. These areas were also largely favored in the skills clusters and specialized skills analysis. As also noted, security clearance was also clearly prominent as one of the most frequently referenced certifications, ranking in the top two most frequently requested certifications for engineering occupations across all five nodes except Systems Analysis and Integration. An overall theme that should be noted in conducting this analysis on the engineer worker profile is the lack of REMADE-relevant technologies directly observed in the job posting data. Though REMADE relevant keywords were used to drive and filter the online posting data, specific skill sets that could be clearly linked to REMADE technologies were not clearly present in the analysis. This possible outcome was discussed by the Institute and EWD Member Committee early in the process of planning this report. This finding suggests companies are prioritizing advertisements for engineers with broad engineering skill sets including quality, process improvement, and project management. It also suggests that REMADE relevant technologies are not widely prevalent or clearly defined within the industries identified in this report to an extent to show up in measurably high frequencies within posting data, specifically skill clusters and specialized skills. An implication for REMADE EWD from these observations is an EWD strategy to support the engineering worker level that will build on these foundational and established engineering competencies through models that are more closely categorized as on-the-job training that are better suited to upskilling engineers with a REMADE understanding that is emergent to their fields and industries. Other training venues that serve in a similar complementary role include webinars and conference workshops provided at professional convenings affiliated with or sponsored by the REMADE Institute. Other possible EWD considerations for the engineer level that complement the skill clusters and certifications observed in the data involve consideration of partnering with the professional associations associated with the certification bodies so prominently featured in the data. Establishing select professional continuing education partnership models could serve as valuable for promoting a REMADE perspective onto the competencies addressed in those certification bodies of knowledge while also gaining access to engineers that are working in REMADE relevant industries and technologies.
